The family in America
A study done on the basis of among other things the collection of emigrant letters indicates that the women’s emigration from Kinda generally follows the common pattern for the Swedish women’s emigration. At the beginning married women go along with their families but afterwards the part of single emigrants gradually increases.

A great part of the girls from Kinda ended up as maids in American homes. To have ”a Swedish maid” employed was popular not least among the wealthy people in Chicago. For those maids who worked hard in the cow-houses at home in Sweden such a new life seemed very attractive.

When marriages later on were established it turns out to the fact that the majority of the women married Swedish or Swedish-American men. Exceptions to this occurred however and that is something we can see from one example of the letters we have chosen. Below we have made a division into some fields. Without having examined it thoroughly we might say that as a rule there is a somewhat other tone in the women’s letters compared to those written by the men.
