Here some letters from the collections. They are from 1860, 1884 and 1899. Notice how the writing becomes more and more alike the writing of today. The first letter is probaly written with a nib (steal pen). The letters are very "thin". In the letter in the middle you see a rather common phenomena. The writer has written up side down to save space.
