Swedish emigration Swedish emigration to North America started in the middle of the 1840s. The first migrants left Sweden because of poor economic conditions, as well as religious and political oppression. Mass migration took place at the same time as the years of famine in the late 1860s. The migrants travelled to something new and hopefully better. The emigration had its peaks when conditions were bad in Sweden at the same time that Americas´s economy was good. This was the case during the period 1868-1871 when near 100 000 persons emigrated and in the 1880s when almost 350 000 Swedes left the country.
